Latest News...

I am currently an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Research Fellow in the Creative and Performing artsRoyal Academy of Music. This post is enabling me to work on plans to redesign some of the keywork of the oboe and to develop a number of techniques that are currently problematic -  as well as work with composers to create a wide range of new repertoire. These are plans that I have been thinking over for many years. At the moment news and details of these developments can be found on the 21st-Century Oboe page which can be found on the above menu.

Fellowship Events: Switched On Oboe and Redefining the Oboe 2 will be presented at the Royal Academy of Music this term. In addition there is a Premiere of Diana Burrell's Vespers which has been written in part as a part of my repertoire development work. Information about these can be found on my events page.

CD Reviews:
My latest CD ‘Greatest Hits of All Time’ has received considerable acclaim in press reviews I have added some of the reviews to the CDs page where there are also links to web reviews. The CD has been chosen as CD of the Month by Music Web International. For further details see the CD page: Greatest Hits of All Time.

  • Above is a button entitled 'Research Pages'. I receive a large number of emails asking questions about the oboe today from both performers and composers. The idea of these pages is that they will supply a range of information on topics of interest to composers, oboists and to students learning music or writing dissertations on aspects of contemporary oboe performance.
  • I have recently added some information on writing for ¼ tones and microtones for the oboe. This is primarily a guide for composers but oboists also may find some interesting information here.

"...the result of a quarter-century’s dedicated research and graft: one man’s love affair with the contemporary oboe. Redgate is one of a tiny band of oboists across the world who have made a life’s work of taking the instrument into the farthest reaches of technical virtuosity and physical capability, and in doing so inspired a generation of composers to create a virtuoso repertoire characterised by blazing compositional audacity and extremity."
